About Tip Calculator
Traditional US etiquette charges gratuity on the tax-inclusive total, so a tip percent is taken after tax is added to the meal. This page follows that order; enter tax as 0 to tip on the meal alone.
The party split divides the full payment: tax and gratuity spread evenly, so nobody pays a different share of the tip than the table agreed to.
Questions about Tip Calculator
Should the tip cover tax?
Traditionally gratuity is charged on the tax-inclusive bill, and most receipts work that way. Some diners tip on the meal alone; enter tax as 0 to model that instead.
Does a bigger party change the tip?
No. The tip follows the bill, not the headcount. More people only changes the per-person split of the same total.
Why do the shares of the bill exceed 100%?
Tax and tip are both charged on the bill, so the total paid is bill plus tax plus tip: over 100% of the meal is exactly the point of the table.
