About Sales Tax Calculator
A price plus tax total is the tagged price multiplied by one plus the combined rate. Most US jurisdictions simply add a state rate and any county or city rate, so this page stacks whatever rates you enter.
The reverse pass matters when a store quotes an all-inclusive price: it divides the gross by one plus the rate to recover what the item carried before tax.
Questions about Sales Tax Calculator
Do county and city tax rates add to the state rate?
Usually. Most states add a county or municipal rate on top of the state rate, which is why the table breaks the total down by source.
How is tax rounded at the register?
Each sale is computed on the full price and rounded at the end, so a paper receipt can differ by a cent from a hand calculation that rounds each line first.
Can I work backwards from a total?
Yes. Enter the tax-inclusive amount as the price and read the last card: it recovers the shelf price by dividing by one plus the rate.
