Character Counter

Counts characters with and without spaces, breaks the text down line by line, and separates graphemes from code points so accents and emoji count correctly.

About Character Counter

Characters are counted three ways: the code units a JavaScript string reports, the Unicode code points behind them, and the grapheme clusters a reader actually sees as one character.

The line table prints each line on its own so you can see a long line hiding inside a paragraph, which matters for forms, captions and code with a hard width limit.

Counts with and without spaces answer two different rules at once: many forms cap the version with spaces, proofreaders quote the version without.

Questions about Character Counter

Which number should I quote to a form field?

The one with spaces, since a space still occupies a slot. The no-space count is what proofreaders use when they ask for a length without spaces.

Why do two counts of the same text differ?

Accents written as a base letter plus a combining mark, and emoji built from several pieces, are one character to a reader but several code units to a program.

Are line breaks counted as characters?

Yes, as part of the with-spaces total. The line table reports each line's own length without its break.

Does a blank line count as a line?

Yes. Blank lines are kept in the line count and shown as zero-length rows so nothing is silently dropped.
